Sonja Park A Pianist Who Moves People

Kuwait Chamber Philharmonia is coming back to the stage with opening its 23rd Concert Season of the Classical Music on its traditional stage on unique ‘Kuwaiti Dhow’ – Al-Hashemi II.Concert will be held at the Abdlu Hussain Marafie Grand Ballroom – Radisson Blue Hotel on Thursday, October 16, 2014 at 8:00 o’clock p.m.

The soloists of the Piano Recital will be world-known Korean pianist, SONJA PARK.

‘She is a unique talent. When she plays one can forget everything. All one feels is love for music. She leads you to another world. She has everything that a musician needs.  She is a born artist.’ – wrote one of her Masters, Prof.   Andrzej Jasinski, President of the International Chopin Competition.

Her life was untypical for young prodigies career. As a young child Sonja Park visited Ronald Reagan in the White House only to sing in a children’s choir from Seoul. Nothing is scripted like an American President’s schedule. Yet Sonja played the piano as well, delighting Reagan so much that he dandled her on his knee.

At the age of 21 Ms. Park’s life changed dramatically when Alexander Jenner heard her in Vienna. Telling her she was “the most talented student he had ever met,” he demanded she become a professional musician, even though she was largely self-taught at that time. Professor Jenner dedicated his last years as a teacher to her at the University of Vienna, where she earned a Degree in Piano Performance with distinction.

As a fully developed artist Sonja continues to make an impact. While still studying, Dora Schwarzberg and Mark Drobinsky asked her to replace Martha Argerich and Alexander Rabinowitsch. With ten days’ notice she learned and performed six Beethoven piano trios with them at the Beethoven Festival in Brescia, Italy.

Sonja’s litany of remarkable stories continues. Recently Ms. Park was invited to open the ‘Qatar Cultural Village’ Opera House in Doha, performing Rachmaninoff’s Third Piano Concerto with the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra.

Born in Seoul, Sonja Park was educated there and in Vienna. The University of Vienna honored her with awards and scholarships from Gonda Weiner, Herbert von Karajan Society, Gesellschaft für Musikfreunde, Ministry for Transport and Science, and Sobotka-Janicek Foundation. In competition Ms. Park won prizes at the Brahms International, Karajan Society, Premio Rodolfo Caporalli, Premio Vittorio Gui and Premio Trio di Trieste.
Sonja Park has collaborated and performed alongside such musicians as Paul Badura Skoda, Max Rysanov, Nikolas Harnoncourt, Dora Schwarzberg, Michael Gutman, Anton Sorokow and Philippe Entremont.

She has appeared on Austrian Radio ORF, Hungarian Radio, RAI UNO in Italy, Slovak Radio and NHK Television in Japan. Ms. Park has played in such concert halls as Konzerthaus Wien, Suntory Hall Tokyo, Wigmore Hall London and Teatro del Maggio Florence, in addition to performances in Bahrain, Bulgaria, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, Kuwait, Russia at the Andrey Sakharov International Art Festival, Slovenia, Tunisia, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates.

Since 2011, Ms. Park has been asked to perform annually with Echo Rising Star Dionysis Grammenos at the Corfu Festival of Arts. 2012 saw Sonja in nothing fewer than 40 performances as a soloist and ensemble player.

On Kuwaiti inauguration of the Concert Season she will present popular repertoire of the pianistic Romantic hits.

Flutist PAWEL STEPIEN is 21 years old. He comes from small town on the south of Poland, Kozy (on English: Goats). The settlement is nearby the regional centre of Beskid Mountains region, Bielsko-Biala. Picturesque very much, placed on the hills, with two old towns and quarterlies of streets with attractive 19th century buildings city was the centre of textile industry.

Along Bialka River there was until of the WW I blow a border between two Emporiums – German and Austro-Hungary. Until now during City Days celebrations you would meet legendary Emperor Franz Joseph walking with Dames of The Court on the river bridge. One of the Textile Barons during industrial boom built on the circle of the Old Town Theatre, beautiful and sweet as a ‘Fancy chocolate box’. This way he explained his admiration to lovely actress, who settled there to play leading roles in the suitable for Diva repertoire. Nowadays Diva as well as the Textile Baron are forgotten already but Theatre exists and represents also high artistic level. Lastly I enjoyed of excellent performance of musical ‘Zorba’ which is a challenge for any ensemble.

Bielsko-Biala is a place of one of the most attractive Jazz Festivals ‘Bielsko Blizzard’, classical music is represented on instrumental-choral Henryk Gorecki Festival, leading in the country ‘Puppet Show Theatre’, Music Centre with attractive concerts and very successful State Music Schools complex (Primary and College) with beautiful modern Concert Hall with excellent acoustic.

To that school years ago parents send their son, Pawel who demonstrate his interest and abilities in music. ‘My adventure with music started from playing piano when I became six. At my seven I entered the exam to the Music School in Bielsko intended to continue my studies on piano. When I passed successfully exam the committee ordered to teach me on flute. Parents were in despair because they invested already in buying piano however they agreed. And such was the beginning…’

Pawel started to study under flute teacher, Mrs. Dorota Korpanty who led him until College graduation. He started very early to represent school on many local and regional shows, music presentation and – competitions, winning series of top prizes. ‘I like my instrument because of it beautiful sound and many possibilities to play with music colours. Additionally it is a very attractive instrument to play and to hear. On the flute you would be able to perform also many fine alternative techniques. Except it on the flute there are many interesting positions giving much satisfaction.’ - adds young virtuoso.

‘When I am free I am listening to music for flute. Except it I listen a lot to film music, especially by John Williams. However my favourite music style is funk. This style represents my favourite formation Tower of Power. Beside of this I listen to jazz, blues, soul, rock, hard rock, even heavy metal.’ Asked for artists influencing him essentially, Pawel mentions: Steve Lukhater, Iana Anderson, Herbie Hancock, Carlos Santana, Chester Thompson, groups TOTO, mentioned above Tower of Power, Deep Purple or Jamiroquai.

‘My idol among flute player is Emmanuel Pahud. Between composers I prefer out of the question John Williams. My idol for life is… football player, Ryan Giggs, who shows that it is possible spending life quiet in classy manner in spite of the great mass popularity. However I cannot forget about Saint Pope John Paul II coming from my native land and – region. Sport generally is my passion aside of music. It is mainly football but also Ski jumping, tennis or snooker. Other my fields of interest are paranormal phenomenon secrets. I love Renaissance painting.’

‘The place I would like to visit the most is South America. I like that culture, especially Latin music. I would like also visit countries of Far and Mid East with their interesting cultures. The top adventure for me would be also excursion to Himalayan Mountains.

‘I have a dream: to tour the world with my concert and recording my music. However the top dream is foundation of the wonderful big family, on the base of common love.

If I would not be a musician, I would prefer to be a football journalist. Maybe because I like commenting the matches on TV I would choose that way. Sometimes even I write small articles or comments or footballs forums than I would write also paragraphs. I would be also interviewing players after matches and lead TV telecasts!’ High-res
